Community Gardens

Mission

Increase food security in Wapello County by increasing the availability of fresh garden produce through mentorship, neighborhood gardens, and by raising produce to donate to local food pantries.

Food Insecurity in Wapello County
According to Feeding America, 2013 Hunger in America Report, 14.3% of Wapello County residents are food insecure and 24% of the children are food insecure.  Although we are improving, Wapello County is consistently in the top counties for food insecurity in the state of Iowa.  The Community Gardens initiative is one strategy in the continuing fight against hunger.

History
In partnership with dozens of local individuals and organizations, United Way hosted an organizing meeting in April, 2013 where over 45 participants identified the following priorities:
  • Increased access to fresh food for elderly residents.
  • Increased availability of fresh produce at the food pantries.
  • Increased access to fresh food for low income families.
Out of these priorities, three programs were developed:
  • Seeds of Hope Garden – Elevated garden beds where elderly and disabled can more easily reach the plants.
  • Food Pantry Garden – Raising garden produce to donate to local food pantries and help raise awareness of food insecurity in the community.
  • Neighborhood Gardens – Partnering with individuals and organizations to take the gardens to the people.
