United Way of Wapello County and the Volunteer Center are seeking volunteers for the Hunger in America study. United Way of Wapello County is hosting a volunteer training on April 16,2013 from 12:00-2:00 PM at 224 E. Second Street, Ottumwa. Volunteers are needed in Burlington, Centerville, Fairfield, Ft. Madison, Keokuk, Mediapolis, Oskaloosa, and Ottumwa.
The Hunger in America study is a partnership between Feeding America and local affiliated food banks. The study began in 1993 and is conducted every four years. This year the Food Bank of Southern Iowa is working with Feeding America to survey clients in its service area. United Way of Wapello County is working with the Food Bank of Southern Iowa to recruit and coordinate the volunteers needed to conduct the study.
The Hunger in America study is part of a broader strategy to alleviate hunger in the United States and in our area. This strategy includes the distribution of food and grocery products to people in need. It also includes addressing the problem of hunger in the long-term by increasing awareness among the public and by improving programs and policies that support low-income Americans.
The study uses face-to-face client interviews and surveys of local food pantries, kitchens and shelters. It captures detailed information about who is in need of emergency food assistance and their circumstances.
United Way of Wapello County and the Volunteer Center are recruiting volunteers to help conduct the survey. Volunteers will help clients at participating food agencies fill out the survey electronically.
