United Way of Wapello County raises $520,000

The 2013 United Way of Wapello County Annual Community Giving Campaign Raises $520,000

The United Way Board of Directors Thanks the Thousands of Community Partners Who Contributed

Ottumwa – June 11, 2014) – United Way of Wapello County thanks all of the individuals and organizations for making a monetary donation to the 2013 Annual Campaign.  In addition to the monetary contribution, hundreds of hours of volunteer work was dedicated to raising needed funds to improve the education, income stability and health of Wapello County.

Over 50 local businesses and organizations provided the opportunity for their employees to make donations to United Way through easy payroll deduction.  Many businesses also match the employee donations or make a corporate contribution to the annual campaign.  In 2013, John Deere Ottumwa Works employees and retirees again led the way and donated over $100,000 and the John Deere Foundation matched employee giving by 10% and awarded a $100,000 grant.

94% of the donations come through work place employee giving campaigns and corporate matches and/or gifts and the other 6% is contributed by private individuals and small businesses.

Donations to United Way are strategically invested by the Board of Directors to improve the education, income stability and health of the community.  United Way’s strategic priority focus is placed on education in the early years of a child’s life to improve the chances of success in future years.  A child that is prepared to enter Kindergarten with the skills needed to succeed is much more likely to do well in school.  A child who reads at grade level by the end of third grade, is more likely to graduate high school on time.  “The problems facing our community are great, even daunting, but by working collaboratively as a community with a shared vision we can create opportunities for a better life for everyone.  Where all children have the skills needed to succeed in school, and where families can earn a living wage so that they can take care of their families and save for retirement, and when we can all enjoy good health,” said Tony Floden, United Way Board Chair.
